Version history

These maps describe a landscape that keeps moving, so each published version is kept exactly as it stood.

28 August 2026 Current

A full re-check against reporting through 28 August, and a redesign onto the KryptoHead palette. Six things had genuinely changed: DeepSeek took outside money and started IPO preparation, so the “never raised” line was simply wrong; the six tigers stopped being one weight class; Xiaomi and ModelBest arrived from outside the list; the premise that US incumbents don't build frontier models collapsed; the IPO race split, with Anthropic going alone; and the government became a node in its own right. Broadcom and the US government were added to the US map, the national AI fund to the China map.

Mid-2026 Archived

The first published version, on the original light celadon-and-ink design. Its picture of the field: “one superpower and several strong” in China with DeepSeek wholly funded by High-Flyer and taking no outside money at all, six tigers still treated as a peer group, and in the US a set of incumbents that fund and supply the frontier labs rather than competing with them. Most of that has since been overtaken — which is exactly why it is worth keeping.

How this works. The current version always lives at the top level of the site; superseded versions move into a dated folder under /archive/ and stay reachable at their own URLs, frozen with the design and the data they shipped with. The source repository holds the full commit history behind both.
